In the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, the Notre-Dame School in Paris laid the foundations of European polyphony. From Léonin to Pérotin, the art of vocal music moved beyond plainchant and blossomed into a polyphony of unprecedented complexity and daring. A true milestone in musical history, this art combined spiritual fervour and architectural rigour in a creative impulse such as had never been seen before.
