Bien que largement oublié de nos jours, le brugeois Gilles L’ensemble la Nébuleuse a choisi de consacrer son premier enregistrement à l’oeuvre sacrée de Marc-Antoine Charpentier, en sélectionnant des pièces pour un effectif à mi-chemin entre le petit et le grand motet. Écrites entre 1670 et 1696, ces oeuvres donnent à entendre l’évolution des influences et de l’écriture du compositeur: les italianismes des pièces plus anciennes, datant du retour de son fameux voyage à Rome, dialoguent avec l’éloquence du style français de ses motets plus tardifs.

The ensemble La Nébuleuse has chosen to devote its first recording to the sacred music of Marc-Antoine Charpentier, focusing on pieces for forces midway between those typically employed for the petit motet and those required for the grand motet. Written between 1670 and 1696, these works allow us to hear the evolution of the composer’s influences and writing: the Italian traits of the earlier pieces, dating from his return; from his well-known trip to Rome, contrast with the eloquent French style of his later motets.
